CRFM & ACTSmart Business Recycling Plan Launch
1 February 2013
On Saturday 2nd Feb 2013, the CRFM will launch the ACTSmart Business Recycling program, traders and visitors to the market will have the opportunity to recycle at the markets like never before.
The ACTSmart Business program is an ACT Government program launched in 2009, it aims to give businesses and offices the guidance to recycle like Canberrans do at home.
• This free program had direct benefits to participants including:
Reduced waste costs
Helps meet corporate environmental commitments
Provides recognition of achievements through accreditation
The program currently has 637 individual sites working towards accreditation, and the CRFM join other organisations offering recycling to their public visitors including The Canberra Stadium, Tuggeranong Hyperdome and Manuka Oval.
There are 186 accredited participants in the ACTSmart program with many seeing reductions in waste to landfill by 50- 80%.
It is expected, with the support of the markets customers, that at least 50% of waste generated will be diverted from landfill each weekend.
Visitors to the market will see large above crowd signage and the familiar yellow topped bins in place from this Saturday.
Visitors will be able to recycle cardboard, plastic bottles and plates, coffee cups, cans and serviettes.
All the recycling from these yellow recycling bins will be recorded and measured against waste volumes and sent to the recycling plant at Hume for processing.
A trial of organics recycling will also be rolled out from this Saturday. This will involve food and coffee vendors with the collection of food waste including coffee grounds.
